Mikey I seriously cannot believe that you are 10. Over the past few weeks I have been having so many memories and flashbacks to the time and events around your birth.
At this age, you know all about how the babies are made and how they arrive here. You also know that you were a big surprise for your dad and I. You were the surprise that encouraged your Great Grampy to accept treatment for his cancer and give us a few months more with him. You were the surprise that forced your dad and I to fight through the rocky early days of marriage. You were the surprise I had no idea I wanted.
This past year you and I have grown closer than we have ever been. The older you get, the more I seem to enjoy spending time with you. You and I seem to have a good understanding of each other.
It’s been a whirlwind year for you also, buddy. This time last year we decided to change your school and put you in a place where your differences would be celebrated and your weaknesses would be given full attention. You have grown so much in school this past year with your new environment and I can’t wait to see what 4th grade holds. I know that moving from your old neighborhood has been hard on you socially. You still haven’t met any boys your age in our new ‘hood. I’m sure eventually we will. But you have made some rock solid friendships with guys at church and I am so thrilled for that.
You blew us away with your wrestling talent in your Rookie year! Third place in state! What an accomplishment. Anyone who has ever watched you on the mat knows that you are 100% heart. You never go down without a fight and you never let the opponent shake you.
Mikey, dude, you seriously are my rock in this family sometimes. When dad is working and your little brothers start acting a fool, you are the one who keeps it together. You can see if I have too much on my plate and you help me out by taking some of it on yourself. Little tasks you perform like taking out trash, cleaning the kitchen, giving Knox a bath, tucking him in at night— all without being asked— help me out so much. It’s like you have a 6th sense of being able to read people. You know when people are sad and you comfort them. You know when people are happy and you join in celebrating with them.
I love that people love you. Every adult and peer you meet is smitten by your charm, confidence, and pre-adolescent swagger. You thrive on acceptance and praise. My prayer for you that you would grow in your confidence in the Lord; that you would always value His opinion of you more than the opinion of others. It’s easy to find happiness in what others say about you and to you, but the true joy comes from believing whole heartedly what the Lord says about you. I pray that you would continue to grow in all of your gifts. You are gifted when it comes to people, son. My hope is that you would use that gift well and always to glorify the Lord. People really listen to you.
“With great power, comes great responsibility.”
I know it’s rough being the oldest sometimes. That’s a heavy load to carry. We, as parents, learn things first with you. But God picked YOU. He picked YOU, Michael Louis, to be the older brother to Linc & Knox, to lead them, to teach them, to guide them. He picked YOU to be our first.
Love you so much son.
